Mendon man convicted of tax crime for filing false return

A man from Mendon, Massachusetts, was recently convicted of a tax crime after the IRS claimed that he under-reported the income that he received from advertisers on his blog. He was convicted of filing a false income tax return at the federal court in Boston, Massachusetts.

The U.S. Attorney and the Department of Justice representatives say that the man pleaded guilty to the charge of filing a false income tax return. According to authorities, the man operated a blog as a part-time job. The blog was about computers and other electronics. Advertisers paid the man for advertising space to contribute articles to the site that reviewed computers, computer components and other items.

The IRS says that the man did not report a proper amount of income for three years, between 2006 and 2008. He reported that he received less income than he really did, enabling him to pay a lower amount of tax for these years. The penalties are stiff for the Mendon man. He is required to pay over $140,000 in restitution to the IRS. He also faces a sentence of up to three years in prison for his conviction of filing a false tax return.

Tax crimes often carry very serious penalties that can cost a person thousands of dollars and years in jail. When taxes are filed incorrectly, the filer must often pay penalties and interest that go back to the date that the original return was filed or the taxes were owed.
