Lauryn Hill: latest celeb to get charged by IRS

For those Bostonians who need to file extensions, schedule payments, pay off liens or appeal a tax decision, take heart. You are not alone. It seems every week there is a new celebrity charged with tax evasion, the failure to file tax returns and/or face multiple audits.

The latest in the line of maybe-they-did-maybe-they-didn't-know-anything-about-it is Lauryn Hill. The five-time Grammy winner was charged with failure to file her federal income tax returns. The IRS and U.S. Attorney General's office say she neglected to file returns for three years.

The 37-year-old singer began her career with The Fugees, then branched out on her own in 1998. During the years between 2005 and 2007, Hill reportedly earned more than $1.6 million and allegedly did not claim any of it.

Nowadays, she earns most of her income from film and recording industry royalties. She also owns and operates four corporations, according to court papers. She has six children, most of them fathered by Rohan Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley.

Other famous celebrities who have had run-ins with the IRS for various reasons including failure to file tax returns include: Willie Nelson, Lionel Richie, Ozzy Osbourne, Kirstie Alley, Soulja Boy, Casey Anthony, Al Pacino, Dennis Rodman, Christie Brinkley, Pete Rose and Martin Scorsese.

Usually, the stars do not face criminal charges or jail time because their tax responsibilities often fall on the shoulders of their accountants, managers or other staff that are the actual perpetrators.

Hill's first federal magistrate appearance is scheduled for June 29.
