Former CPA accused of tax evasion in Massachusetts

Let's face facts, not very many people jump up and down when it's time to pay their taxes. Every year, thousands of people pay in to the IRS, to settle any outstanding balance they may owe. However, sometimes taxpayers make mistakes on returns or neglect to file the correct documentation. Recently, false tax returns resulted in charges of tax evasion for a former Revere, Massachusetts, accountant.

The 55-year-old man was brought up on 20 counts of aiding the preparation of false tax returns and four counts of tax evasion. According to a press release by the IRS, five other individuals were also charged with some form of tax violation in the state of Massachusetts.

The indictment against the Revere man states that he generated over $940,000 in income that was never reported. The indictment also states that he neglected to pay taxes from the year 2002 through 2005. In an ironic twist, the former CPA is also accused of preparing fraudulent tax returns for his clients.

The IRS is intimidating in and of itself. People who owe money to the Internal Revenue Service and neglect to pay may find that all their financial matters are affected, including their credit score. An attorney told reporters that the U.S. Attorney's Office would investigate and prosecute people aggressively if they avoid their duty as a taxpayer.

Whether by mistake or a purposeful act, individuals who neglect to file tax returns properly can face serious consequences. An attorney with sound knowledge of tax law may help men and women cope with the aftermath brought on by tax evasion allegations.
