Former U.S. Rep. pleads guilty to tax fraud

Former United States representative Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, a former alderman, will be heading to prison after admitting to being involved in misusing campaign funds. In February, the pair pleaded guilty to several tax crimes. If a Massachusetts citizen is found guilty of a federal tax crime, they could also be the recipient of a prison sentence.

Former Illinois Congressman Jackson Jr. pleaded guilty to felony charges of mail fraud, false statements and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He also admitted that he used at least $750,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses that included vacation cruises, fine dinners and a Rolex watch. The wife pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns regarding the same campaign fund. She also pleaded guilty to under-reporting about $600,000 in taxes due.

Jackson Jr. received a prison sentence of 2 1/2 years for the federal charges. He was also sentenced to 500 hours of community service and a three-year sentence of supervised release. His wife received a sentence of one year in prison. She also received a sentence of 12 months of supervised release. Both spouses were sentenced to significantly less time than the sentencing guidelines suggest. The judge took into consideration that the couple has minor children and is allowing the parents to serve their sentences one at a time.

Boston tax lawyers may be able to assist individuals who've been charged with a tax crime or who face accusations of committing certain tax crimes. In some cases, a Boston tax lawyer may be able to get a client to avoid a prison sentence by agreeing to cooperate with authorities or by paying restitution.
