Worcester synagogue and school seized by IRS

In Worcester, Massachusetts, a Jewish Synagogue and day school has been seized by the IRS. The Internal Revenue Service took the building for nonpayment of taxes owed to the government, originating from tax obligations incurred in 2004.

The synagogue owes back taxes to the federal government in the amount of $435,235 dollars. The bulk of back taxes owed are from payroll taxes. This information was obtained through the Worcester County Registry of Deeds as well as through the Internal Revenue Service. The synagogue and day school are still in business although the building has been put up for public auction with bids starting at $472,000.

The synagogue had other problems in the past year with a bank foreclosure of the school's dormitory that had been purchased by a member of the synagogue. The dormitory is in the process of being renovated by the new owners. Other troubles plague the synagogue with mounting overdue utility and water payments as well as a large mortgage.

When the Internal Revenue Service seizes property, issues bank account levies or issues wage garnishments, a tax law attorney may help a private party or business in the matter. He or she may be able to assist with restoring bank accounts or releasing paychecks from garnishments. A tax attorney may be able to help set up a payment plan that allows the party to retain his or her property or paycheck. In some cases, tax settlements may be possible to help pay off back taxes. Dealing with the IRS can be a complex process and a tax attorney can provide legal assistance to individuals and businesses that need it.
