Massachusetts film director accused of tax fraud

Massachusetts native and acclaimed film maker Daniel Adams was arraigned recently in Boston Municipal Court. Adams directed the films "The Golden Boys" and "The Lightkeepers" on Cape Cod. Now he is accused of tax crimes in connection with the making of those movies. The film maker is accused of receiving a tax credit overpayment of approximately $4.7 million.

Adams, who grew up in Boston and graduated from Harvard College, has also worked in politics, including two gubernatorial campaigns, an attorney general race, and a presidential campaign. In addition to movies, he has directed award-winning commercials for a Boston advertising firm. Adams' first feature film, which he co-wrote and directed, was "A Fool and His Money," starring, among others, Sandra Bullock and George Plimpton.

Prosecutors claim Adams fraudulently submitted tax credit applications that allegedly inflated expenses for "The Lightkeepers" and "The Golden Boys." According to the Massachusetts film tax credit statute, film production companies can receive a 25 percent tax credit for a range of payroll and production costs incurred in the state.

The charges against Adams include two counts of larceny over $250 and two counts of making a false claim against the Commonwealth. Reportedly, Massachusetts State Police arrested the film maker on Dec. 8 without incident.

The attorney general's investigation began in March 2010. That is when a Department of Revenue (DOR) investigator is said to have noticed irregularities in tax returns related to the "The Lightkeepers." The DOR then began looking into the matter and later conveyed their findings to the attorney general's Fraud and Financial Crimes Division. The attorney general's investigation is reportedly ongoing.
